  • Helen Ford

    Horatio Alger Jr, AlwaysWrite Ent

eBook (The John C. Winston Co., Nov. 14, 2013)
Horatio Alger Jr.(1832 – 1899), wrote over 100 poems, short stories, and novels during his lifetime, including four adult novels and one adult novella. He gained notoriety when his friendship with ‘William Taylor Adams’, a boys’ author, changed Horatio’s interest to writing for the juvenile market. Alger devoted his writing to his ‘formula, rags-to-riches’ books for boys.‘Helen Ford’ (aka A Child of Fortune) was one of the author’s few adult novels, and one of only two stories which had a female heroine (the other being Tattered Tom; the Story of a Street Arab). Although Alger’s adult novels were not as well received as his ‘boys’ books’, Helen Ford is a charming tale of a 14 year old girl who supports her widowed father (an absent-minded inventor) by singing in a variety show. Through a series of misadventures, lies, and deliberate deceit on the part of a cousin, Helen’s father has been kept estranged from his own wealthy father. Eventually, they are reunited and welcomed back into the family by Helen’s grandfather.Further information on this prolific author will be found in the introduction provided by AlwaysWrite Ent. Although many of the books offered by AlwaysWrite Ent. are provided exactly as the author presented them in their original format, all works have been entered, and edited by hand, and not merely scanned. They have been spell-checked, and punctuation corrected where necessary.
